To safely dispose of your computers, printers and other electronic material that are too dysfunctional to be donated to charities, you can visit the City of Houston recycling sites.
If you reformat your computer's hard drive to remove all personal data before you dispose of your computer, it will make the file system on your computer unusable, but people can still use software that reads your disk at a hardware level to extract data. If this concerns you, please contact a reputable computer service technician to ensure proper destruction of your valued data.
Electronic Scrap Recycling by the City of Houston
(from http://www.houstontx.gov/solidwaste/recycling.html#scrap )Residential electronic scrap items accepted by the City of Houston are monitors, televisions, printers, keyboards, mice, scanners, fax machines, telephone handsets, VCRs, CPUs, cellular phones without batteries and other small consumer electronics.
Computers and related components contain hazardous materials that can leak into a community's water supply. Cathode ray tubes (CRTs), circuit boards, batteries, and mercury switches contain hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, cadmium and chromium.
Electronic scrap items can be dropped off at the Westpark Consumer Recycling Center or the Environmental Service Center (South and North).

From Rice: Take Speherd north, turn left after the 59 bridge and enter 59 going west. Exit Fountainview, stay on frontage. Turn left on Fountainview and go under the first bridge, then immediately take the first left on Westpark at the traffic light. The first building on your left is the Recycling Center. Follow its signs to enter in the second gate and drive up the ramp. Stop the car there and they will help you unload your equipment.
